For Dorset the example we have written up in full is Lonnen Road in Wimborne, a private residential scheme where we installed the piles and built the ground beams as a single programme.

It ran for about four weeks. Treat it as one example, because only some of our jobs appear on this site and our family's piling experience goes back over 20 years. The Southampton office is the nearest of our three to Bournemouth, Poole and the rest of the county.

We were appointed for the complete foundation package at Lonnen Road: SFA piling and reinforced concrete ground beams, managed together. The piling was 26 sectional flight auger piles at 300mm diameter, installed by injection. Design working loads ranged from 70kN to 250kN.
Each position was installed to the engineer's specification and checked by sonic integrity testing. The ground beams came next: 98 linear metres at 600mm by 450mm and 19 linear metres at 450mm by 450mm, 117 linear metres in total.
The beams incorporate 220mm Cellcore and 75mm Heaveguard as protection against heave. Concrete cubes were tested as part of the quality checks. The package was handed over ready for the next trade, with the testing documents and quality records complete.
Lonnen Road is a fair measure of a mid-sized job: 26 piles, two beam sizes, two kinds of heave protection and two kinds of testing, all inside one programme of about four weeks.

SFA piling is one of our mini piling methods. The auger is made of short sections, one to two metres long, added one at a time as the hole deepens. Depth is therefore not limited by the height of the rig.
There are two ways to form the pile. In an open bore we drill, withdraw the auger and fill the hole. With injection, the method used at Wimborne, the concrete is pumped through the auger as we go. SFA piles reach 15m or more and carry up to 400kN each, subject to the ground and the engineer's design.
The same compact rigs keep transport simple and leave less of the site to make good afterwards. Sectional rigs also work under low headroom, from 2.4m, which opens up places a full-height rig cannot enter.

We have to be straight about this section. The Wimborne write-up records the piles, the beams and the testing, but it does not describe the soil that was met. We are not going to fill that gap from a textbook.
What the record does show is how the foundation was detailed: piles formed by injection, and beams protected with 220mm Cellcore and 75mm Heaveguard. Heave protection is fitted where the design calls for it, to guard against ground movement, and that is as much as we can fairly read from it. When more Dorset jobs are written up, their ground will be described here. Until then, your own ground investigation report is the right source, and we will read it before we recommend a method.

Wimborne shows the arrangement we recommend to builders, developers, groundworkers and engineers in Dorset: one contractor for the piles and the concrete. Splitting them between two firms invites delay and argument over who is responsible when something is out of place.
Multi-plot housing, commercial buildings and programmes of several weeks are the subject of this page. Our written-up job in Buckingham is a multi-plot scheme of 244 CFA piles with over 417 linear metres of beams, built in about ten weeks. If you have a Dorset scheme of that kind, send us the drawings.
Start by sending your drawings. If you have a structural engineer's design we work to it, and if you do not, we can provide a pile and foundation design of our own.
At the end you receive the pile logs and concrete records that Building Control will want to see, along with the warranty and insurance documents.
