Our team delivered the screw pile foundation and reinforced concrete raft slab for a replacement garden building at The Old Vicarage in Greywell, near Hook in Hampshire. The oak-framed building required a piled solution designed to carry loads efficiently down to competent chalk bedrock beneath the upper gravel soils.
The pile design for the Greywell site was based on a ground profile of gravel with flints overlying chalk, with an effective soil density of 18kN/m³ and a friction angle of 30°. These conditions were well-suited to helical screw piles, which achieve their capacity through both end bearing and shaft friction in granular soils.
We installed 6 Type 76R screw piles, each with triple helix lead flights and a total shaft length of 6 metres. The helices — at 200mm, 250mm and 300mm diameter — were torqued into the chalk-bearing stratum, with installation verified by monitoring torque pressure against the design values. Safe working loads ranged from 50kN to 100kN per pile, with an achieved factor of safety of 4.1 — well above the required minimum of 2.5.
The 28m² reinforced concrete raft slab was cast at 175mm thickness on 50mm blinding, completing the foundation for the garden building. The entire project — mobilisation, piling and slab — was delivered in approximately four days.
