9 screw piles and a 28m² reinforced concrete raft slab for an extension to a thatched cottage in Arkesden, Essex. Boulder clay ground and an existing well beneath the footprint required a carefully designed piled foundation with full anti-heave protection, completed in just four days.
Our team delivered the screw pile foundation and reinforced concrete raft slab for an extension to Bulls Green Cottage, a characterful thatched property in the village of Arkesden near Saffron Walden in Essex. The extension required a piled solution to transfer building loads through variable near-surface soils to competent ground beneath.
The geological profile at Arkesden indicated boulder clay extending to significant depth, providing a consistent bearing stratum well-suited to helical screw piles. An existing well within the building footprint added complexity to the pile layout, requiring careful positioning of the nine pile locations around the obstruction.
We installed 9 Type 76R screw piles with triple helix lead flights, each torqued into the boulder clay using an excavator-mounted attachment. Safe working loads ranged from 50kN to 80kN depending on position, with all piles achieving installation pressures that exceeded the engineer's design requirements — confirming adequate bearing capacity across the full layout.
The 28m² reinforced concrete raft slab was cast at 250mm thickness using C28/35 concrete with A393 mesh reinforcement top and bottom, supported on 225mm Cellcore HX-S anti-heave void formers. The building inspector approved the foundation on the day of the pour, and the entire project was completed in four days from mobilisation.
