REAL JOBS

Piling Kent: 64 driven piles for four bungalows in New Romney

At Lydd Road we installed the piled foundations and the reinforced concrete ground beams for four new-build chalet bungalows. We proposed driven steel cased piles because they produce no spoil and need far less piling mat and enabling work than CFA piles.

The piles are steel cased driven mini piles of 150mm diameter. There are 64 of them, 16 under each bungalow, with safe working loads of 75kN to 122kN. Each steel casing was driven with a 0.25 tonne drop hammer, then reinforced with two H16 bars. Piling ran from 7 to 22 August 2026.

The ground beams are 600 × 450mm reinforced concrete on a void former, with four H16 bars top and bottom and H10 links. They were poured in two stages, on 27 August and 4 September 2026.

All 64 piles were integrity tested, and all passed.

METHODS

Mini piling Kent: why a driven casing suited New Romney

Steel cased driven piling is one of our mini piling methods. A steel casing is driven into the ground and pushes the soil aside, so nothing is dug out and there is no spoil to cart away. At New Romney that was the reason for proposing it, along with the smaller piling mat and the lighter enabling work.

Steel cased piles come in standard sizes of 150mm, 168mm, 220mm and 273mm, and the engineer's loads decide which is used. Our other mini piling methods are bored with an auger, for sites where a drain, a neighbour or the engineer rules out driving.

Screw piles are a further option for light structures: steel shafts with helical plates, wound into the ground with no spoil. Which method fits a Kent site follows from the drawings and the ground report.

GROUND CONDITIONS

Ground in Kent

Only one Kent site is shown here, so this is a report of that site and not of the county. At Lydd Road in New Romney the ground is soft alluvial clay over sand, with groundwater.

Driven steel cased piles do not bring soil to the surface, which is why they produce no spoil. The write-up gives no levels for the clay, the sand or the water, so we give none.

Maidstone, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Dartford and Canterbury may stand on quite different ground. A ground investigation of the site itself is what the engineer designs from, and we read it before recommending a method. If you have no report, tell us what you do have and we will say what is needed next.

WHO WE WORK FOR

Piling companies Kent: piles and beams from one contractor

Lydd Road shows how we like to work: four bungalows, 64 piles and the ground beams, all from one contractor.

Our clients are builders, developers, groundworkers and structural engineers with drawings ready. This page is written for housing plots, commercial buildings and programmes of several weeks, and shorter jobs are welcome too.

For larger schemes CFA piling is the usual method. A rig installs 10 to 20 piles a day, depending on diameter and depth.

To quote a Kent site we need the drawings, the address and the ground investigation report if one exists. A detailed quote comes back within 24 hours of the drawings.

Every job carries a 12-year workmanship and materials warranty, subject to its terms, along with the pile records Building Control asks for.
