On Sylvan Avenue in Mill Hill a block of single-storey garages was to be rebuilt on a new piled raft. A shared drain ran a little over three metres from the work. That was too close for driven piles, so the piles were bored.
They are sectional flight auger mini piles, open-bored at 300mm diameter. There are 15 piles, with working loads of 50kN to 100kN, and each has a cage of four H12 bars. The piles went in over two days, on 14 and 15 April 2026.
The raft over them is 250mm reinforced concrete of about 57m², in C28/35 concrete, with A393 steel mesh top and bottom. It was cast on a 225mm void former for anti-heave protection. We were on site from 1 to 27 April 2026, working on twelve days.
In Bromley the job was the piled foundations and two reinforced concrete bases built for two freestanding LED video screens at a football stadium on Hayes Lane. Each screen is designed to stand on a single steel column, with one base under each column. Screw piles were considered, because the work sat between buried services, and ruled out: the ground was not favourable for them and the engineer had specified driven steel cased piles.
Eight steel cased driven mini piles of 220mm went in, four under each base. Each casing was driven with a 0.5 tonne drop hammer and reinforced with four H16 bars. Each pile is designed for 150kN in compression, 30kN in tension and 25kN of lateral load. The first four piles were driven on 1 July 2026, the day work started on site.
