30 SCD mini-piles and 109 linear metres of reinforced concrete ground beams for a new-build home on a sloping site in Slapton, South Devon. Variable made ground and groundwater over Devonian siltstone bedrock required driven piles to depths of up to 4m, with suspended beams bridging the slope.
Our team delivered the piled foundations and reinforced concrete ground beams for a new-build residential property at Carlane Lodge in Slapton, South Devon. The site sits on sloping ground within the village, with variable made ground and persistent groundwater making conventional strip foundations impractical.
The ground investigation at Slapton revealed up to 2m of made ground overlying the Meadfoot Group — an extremely weathered Devonian siltstone interbedded with silty clay. Groundwater was encountered between 1.1m and 3.5m depth across the five exploratory boreholes, confirming the need for a piled solution to reach competent bedrock.
We installed 30 Steel Cased Driven (SCD) mini-piles at 150mm diameter, driven to depths ranging from 2m to 4.1m into the siltstone. Each pile carried a safe working load of 90kN, reinforced with 2H16 rebar to full depth and concreted with C28/35 grade. All 30 piles achieved the required set criteria on site.
Following piling, 109 linear metres of 525mm by 300mm reinforced concrete ground beams were cast to create a suspended foundation system — an effective engineering solution for the site's significant slope. The complete piling and ground beam package was delivered in approximately two weeks from mobilisation, ready for the timber frame superstructure.
