36 SCD mini-piles and a 164m² reinforced concrete raft slab for a new-build home next to a historic signal box in rural Hampshire. Layered clay and sand soils required driven piles to 8m with full anti-heave protection.
This project delivered the complete piled foundation for a new-build residential property at Signal Box Farm, a rural site in Burghclere near Newbury. The ground investigation revealed challenging layered soils — alternating bands of clay and sand extending to 18m depth — making a piled solution essential for long-term stability.
Our team installed 36 Steel Cased Driven (SCD) mini-piles at 220mm diameter, each driven to an average depth of 8 metres using a 0.5-tonne hammer. Individual pile loads ranged from 50kN to 140kN depending on position, with every pile reinforced with 2H16 rebar to 6m depth. All piles were set-tested to confirm bearing capacity.
Following piling, we constructed the 164.5m² reinforced concrete raft slab at 250mm thickness using C28/35 grade concrete with A393 mesh reinforcement top and bottom. The slab incorporated 160mm Cellcore HX-S anti-heave void formers beneath to protect against clay heave, plus timber edge formwork and a brick edge toe detail.
The entire project — from mobilisation through piling to the finished slab pour — was completed within 12 days, on programme and to the engineer's specification.
