27 CFA piles and 120 linear metres of reinforced concrete ground beams for a replacement dwelling in Chertsey, Surrey. Gravel soils with a high water table at just one metre required sideform shuttering to all ground beams and comprehensive anti-heave protection against the underlying clay.
Our team delivered the complete piled foundation for a replacement dwelling at Tudor Rose on Laleham Reach in Chertsey, Surrey. The new building required 27 piles and an extensive ground beam layout to support the full footprint of the house on challenging riverside ground.
The site investigation at Chertsey revealed topsoil over a shallow clay layer, underlain by a 5.75-metre band of gravel before reaching deep London Clay beneath. Groundwater sat at just one metre below ground level — a significant factor for both piling and ground beam construction. These conditions demanded a piled solution founded into the competent gravel stratum, with comprehensive anti-heave measures to protect against clay movement at depth.
We installed 27 Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles at 350mm diameter using a Klemm 708 compact rig. Safe working loads ranged from 90kN to 270kN across the pile layout, with every pile reinforced with 4H12 bar cages and sonic integrity tested to confirm structural soundness. On the best production day, the team completed 12 CFA piles — strong output for a compact rig on a residential site.
Following piling, 120 linear metres of 600mm by 450mm reinforced concrete ground beams were constructed with full sideform shuttering — necessary due to the loose soils and high water table. All beams sat on 155mm Cellcore HXB anti-heave void formers with Heaveguard to internal faces, protecting the foundation against clay heave. The complete piling and ground beam package was delivered in approximately five weeks.
