The two Berkshire jobs written up on this site are examples, chosen because they sit at opposite ends of our work. One is a commercial dairy building near Reading on driven mini-piles. The other is a house at Winkfield, Windsor, on screw piles and ground beams.

The two jobs show the range: four weeks and six days, a production building and a home, a raft slab and a beam layout. Behind them sits over 20 years of family piling experience, and the jobs on this page are examples from it. All three of our offices take Berkshire enquiries.

Village Maid Cheese needed a larger production building at Riseley. The site is rural, and mature Hybrid Black Poplar trees stood within the zone of influence of the new foundation, 21m from the footprint.
We installed 30 steel cased driven mini-piles at 150mm diameter, each driven to firm bearing in the London Clay. Safe working loads ran from 70kN to 160kN across the layout. Each pile was reinforced with a 2H16 rebar cage and set-tested on site before the slab pour.
A driven casing pushes the soil aside instead of bringing it up, so the method leaves no spoil to take off site. The concrete and the rebar cage go inside the steel tube, which stays in the ground.
The raft slab is 154m² at 250mm thick, cast in C28/35 concrete. The building inspector praised the quality of the workmanship. From mobilisation to handover the job took four weeks, on programme.

The Riseley piles are mini piling in its plainest form. A 150mm steel casing carried up to 160kN on that job. Steel cased piles come in four standard sizes, 150mm, 168mm, 220mm and 273mm, and the size is matched to the load each position has to take.
At Lacuna in Winkfield the piles were lighter again: 11 Type 76R triple-helix screw piles, installed to verified torque and bearing criteria, with capacities up to 120kN each. Reinforced concrete ground beams at 500mm by 400mm span between them, cast to DC-2 / DS-2 durability class.
The beams have 220mm Cellcore under their soffits and 75mm Heaveguard on their faces as protection against heave. Concrete cubes were tested as the specification required. Piles and beams were finished in about six days, mobilisation included.

The Riseley write-up gives a clear picture of that one site. The investigation found sandy clay that does not shrink in the top 1.5m, with London Clay beneath it. The soil near the surface was good. It was the trees, and the shrinkable clay expected lower down, that made piles the right choice for the long-term stability of the building.
For Winkfield the write-up records the concrete class and the heave protection but no soil profile, so we will not describe that ground here. Two sites do not make a map of Berkshire. Send your ground investigation report and the engineer's drawings, and the method will follow from those.

The dairy shows the kind of job this page is written for: a working business, a commercial building and a programme of weeks. Our clients are developers, contractors, groundworkers and engineers who have drawings ready.
On a larger scheme the piling is usually CFA, which reaches 15m or more in a single pass and carries far higher loads than a mini pile. On any scheme we can take the concrete as well. One contractor then cuts the piles, fixes the steel, books the Building Control inspection and pours.
At Winkfield each pile was set out to the structural engineer's layout, and installation records were kept throughout so every pile can be traced.
